COMMEMORATION OF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 12 AUG, 2017

Background

The International Youth Day (IYD), celebrated on 12 August each year, was established by the United Nations in 2000 as a means of raising awareness of issues affecting young people around the world.
Each year the Secretary-General of the United Nations decides upon a theme for the Day on the basis of issues of concern to young people. The theme for 2017 is ‘Youth Building Peace’.

For this year’s International Youth Day 2017, the Galmudug Youth Association Network, with the support of the COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION, is co-organizing an event to celebrate the Day (Interim Capital City of Galmudug, ADADO).

The event was bringing together young people, Galmudug Youth Association Network GYAN and other experts to discuss issues relating to youth migration and the role of Peace Building. International Youth Day 12 AUG, 2017 On this day young people around the world will raise their voices as part of International Youth Day, calling on world leaders to set ambitious goals to end poverty, inequalities, given
their rights and the role of policy in their country and climate change.
Various programme were part of the event, few are Slogan, Sports match, and other cultural activities.

Objectives of International Youth Day Event 

The objectives of the International Youth Day are to: 
  • Raise awareness of the opportunities and risks associated with Somali youth migrations and extremism and unemployment; 
  • Share knowledge and information stemming from recent research and analysis on this commemoration day; 
  • Review good practice on policies and programmes promoting employment and safe migration among young people. 
Main themes discussed during the event 

The 12 August event will shed light on a number of themes that are key to addressing youth 
building peace issues. 
  • Understanding youth building peace - opportunities and risks. There is a general lack  of awareness on the working and living how they can build peace. While young people can open up valuable opportunities to build a peace and be peacekeepers, The discussion will aim to identify the factors that contributed to develop the good practices, lessons learned and reliability of the same practices, and we agree the Theme of this year UN and all other young people around the world, and also we chosen YOUTH BUILDING PEACE 2017.

The event was gathered different actors of Galmudug area, including young people, 
representatives from youth organizations and representatives of young MP Galmudug state of Somalia.
